Sant’ Erasmo

Imagine yourself in the middle of the lagoon of Venice on an island where peace and tranquility  are surrounded by green fields. This is the island  of Sant’Erasmo better known as “the garden of Venice” because since the days of the Venetian Republic the fields and the vineyards of this place have replenished the dinner tables of the Doges, and the Venetian nobles and which still retains this agricultural characteristic . Even today ,”in the secret garden of Venice”, you can visit the places once habited by the citizens of the city of Altino fled from the barbarian invasions. The Maximilian Tower, for example, is a circular structure erected in the middle of 19th century wanted by ‘Archduke Maximilian and today remains the only example of this type of  architecture in Italy. Here are hosted art exhibitions and galleries that tell the history and life of this island and the lagoon that surrounds it. Spend the relaxing, slower and quieter day  between a field and a vineyard! You can taste the typical products of this island as the “castraure”, a small purple artichoke, either or harvesting period in October, you can taste the typical wine of the island named “Torbolino” made from white grapes. The wine is slightly sparkling . A visit is definitely recommended and the island is easily reached by water bus number 13 from the bus stop Fondamente Nuove.
